Electronic driving log – the digital logbook
Electronic steering protocol in Austria
In Austria, a driver's data and working hours originally had to be entered manually into a logbook. Due to changed protocol requirements, the tax offices have introduced detailed information requirements for drivers and vehicles in log books with effect from January 01, 2018. This posed a major challenge for companies that were already struggling with paperwork and formal processes. However, this method was not only costly but also ineffective in documentation. This situation led to regulatory changes influenced by advancing technology. However, many people are not aware that they can overcome these challenges by using electronic logbooks, which are now accepted by authorized institutions, significantly speeding up most processes.
What is an electronic driving log/logbook?
An electronic logbook provides precise records of vehicle operating data and driver activities. It is used to save time and costs in forwarding companies, transport and service organizations. Such a logbook is usually a small device that is mounted in the vehicle cabin. Some devices are portable and can be carried by drivers. Additionally, it may include components such as data collection sensors that are attached to the vehicle and collect various metrics such as engine temperature, fuel consumption, vehicle movements, speed and other important parameters. The collected vehicle and driver data can be automatically sent to an office or stored for other purposes such as timing or verification during a vehicle inspection.
ELECTRONIC STEERING PROTOCOLAdvantages of electronic logging
Companies can increase their productivity and profitability by using electronic logging in several ways:
- An electronic steering log records data automatically, saving numerous hours of work that would otherwise be needed to fill out logs by hand. This automation reduces both paper errors and the time required to correct those errors.
- Vehicle inspections will be made easier by making the data displayed on the device and easier to view by Department of Transportation officials. The data can also be transferred electronically for quick and easy processing.
- Automatic monitoring of operating hours and alerts to the driver before those hours are exceeded help avoid violations that can result in both costly fines and possible increases in insurance premiums.
- Monitoring vehicle data can simplify maintenance planning and report problems early to prevent equipment failures.
