Family Worries – Do we need an alarm system for seniors?

Who wants to think about caring for their parents in the future? So that this doesn't become a burden or lead to stress, there is an alarm system for seniors. Kathrin from Rhineland-Palatinate tells you how important these can be. Because she never thought about anything like that. She didn't even know it. But that suddenly changed one day:

I was actually supposed to take Lea to her currently “best” friend Emilie’s birthday after school today. But nothing comes of it. I already suspect that in exchange for this I will have a free tantrum in the back seat. Why today of all days? Why not another day? A day that Lea wasn't looking forward to as much as she is today? “There are pony rides there” was a sentence I heard from her every day for the last two weeks. Why the change of plans? My mother had a bad fall and I didn't know anything about her condition. So I drove to the hospital as quickly as I could with a screaming and crying child!

The nightmare comes true!

So while I was waiting for a doctor, I was frantically thinking about what to do next, because this was the second time this month! The last fall wasn't so bad though! If it were up to me, I would have her cared for in a nursing home. But she strictly refuses to do so. She cannot live with us because our small apartment in the city simply cannot meet her needs. Also there is no elevator.

So as I was going through my options in my head, I thought of another mother's comment at school. I picked this up casually while I was dressing Lea. She said something about an alarm system for seniors! So get out with your cell phone and look online. I immediately searched Google and was amazed. There really is everything: from a wristband to switches and floor mats - unbelievable!

Does the alarm system for seniors really exist?

Completely stunned by my obvious uncertainty, the doctor suddenly stood in front of me and looked at me questioningly. He explained to me that this time the fall had resulted in a fracture and that my mother should now stay in the hospital for a few days. After recovery and a little rehab, she would be fit again. She is a strong woman, he emphasized with a grin. However, he also asked me to change her care in the future. Because that could be really dangerous in the long run. “No problem,” I replied. “I now know the alarm system for seniors.”

But a happy ending

My mother has now been released and is happily back at home. At first she was anything but enthusiastic about the term “alarm system for seniors”… So I gave her a choice. Either that or nursing home or we'll get you the emergency call bracelet we found on the internet. She then quickly came to terms with the idea. Living independently at home with a little control is more what she wants. And what should I say? Today I'm actually driving Lea to Carina's birthday - her new best friend - and this time I only see smiling children's eyes in the back seat.
